âCollins and Oceans are both dead?â Hannibal asked, after Smith returned.
âYes, sir.â
âThen tell me, Smith, why is it that you are still alive?â
âThere warnât nothinâ I could do about it, Hannibal. I wasnât even there in the saloon at the time.â
âWhere were you?â
âWell, I had walked down to take a look at the bank, when I heard the shootinâ. And since it come from the saloon, I went back down to see what had happened. Thatâs when I saw both of âem lyinâ on the floor, dead. I figured the smartest thing I could do then, would be to come back here ân tell you about it.â
âWho killed them?â
âYeah, well, you ainât goinâ to like this,â Smith said. âBut from what I heard, the man that kilt them was Smoke Jensen.â
âSmoke Jensen,â Hannibal said. âHe has, indeed, become an irritant. Collins and Oceans now make a total of nine of my men he has killed. We need to kill him before this goes any further.â
âThis Jensen feller wasnât alone,â Smith said. âThere was another man with him, and from what I hear, heâs the one that kilt Collins.â
âWhat is the other manâs name?â Hannibal asked.
âPearlie.â
âPearlie?â
âThatâs the only name I heard.â
âTaylor, is he the one that was with Jensen when you and Moss were brought in?â
âNo, sir. That was a fella by the name of Cal, something. I donât know what his last name is, âcause I never heard it spoke.â
âBut you would recognize Smoke Jensen on sight, wouldnât you?â
âOh, yes, sir, you better believe that. Iâll never forget what that son of a bitch looks like.â
âGood. When we conduct our raid on Brimstone, I want you to be looking for Smoke Jensen. If you see him, point him out to me. I intend to make him a special target.â
âWhen are we going to hit Brimstone?â Rexwell asked.
âWhen I give the order,â Hannibal replied.
âBut with Oceans and Collins both dead ân Smith not in town no more, we wonât have nobody in town waitinâ on us,â Rexwell said.
âI have planned the operation and we will not deviate from it,â Hannibal said.
âYou think that bank will have as much money as the one in Laurette had?â Moss asked.
âBecause of the Double Dinkle Mine nearby, I expect it will have even more money than did the bank in Laurette,â Hannibal said. âBut, no matter how much they have, we will take every cent.â
âHannibal, may I make a suggestion?â Rexwell asked.
âWhat is it?â
âWell, sir, just rememberinâ what Jensen done at the ranch ân then what he done at Brown Spur when we went to get Taylor ân Moss back, do we really want to hit the town while heâs there? Donât forget, like you said, heâs done kilt nine of us.â
âWhat is your suggestion?â
âMore ân likely he will be spendinâ tonight in town. I say we find out what room heâs stayinâ in ân we sneak up to the room ân kill âim in his sleep.â
âYou have someone in mind for the job?â
âYes, sir, I do.
